These days, Mexico City is facing a heatwave with temperatures reaching up to 32 degrees, according to the forecast. This increases the likelihood of suffering a heatstroke, so it is important to know how to act in this situation.
The treatment for heatstroke focuses on quickly cooling the body to prevent damage to vital organs. The first recommendation is to move the person to a cool place and offer them sips of water with electrolytes. In severe cases, it may be necessary to immerse the person in cold or icy water under hospital supervision.
First, it is important to find a cool or shaded place for the person, with fresh air circulation. If necessary, some clothing should be removed to allow the skin to cool. The skin can also be sprayed with cool water and fanned to promote evaporation, or the patient can be covered with blankets or towels soaked in cold water and elevate their uncovered feet no more than 30 centimeters.
It is essential to offer fresh water or sports drinks with electrolytes if the person is conscious and can drink without difficulty. In extreme cases, where a person loses consciousness and shows no signs of circulation, CPR should be performed and emergency services called if there is no improvement in the next few minutes.
A person who is unconscious should not be submerged in cold water, as this may hinder breathing or cause cardiac arrest. Additionally, alcoholic beverages should not be offered, as these can contribute to dehydration.
